“I’m full of joy, redeemed, set free” is the slogan being used by the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. It is taken from the opening lines of a psalm-poem by the Rhineland cabaret artist and writer Hanns Dieter Hüsch (1925-2005).

Regional Church

Community stretching between Emmerich and Saarbrücken

The Evangelical Church in the Rhineland (EKiR) is made up of 719 parishes, organised in 38 church districts. 2.65 million members belong to the local church congregations of the Rhineland Church.

The region covered by the Church stretches between Emmerich and Saarbrücken, including parts of the four federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and the Saarland. The Regional Church – which is the second largest of the 20 regional member churches of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) – is a community made up of the local church parishes and the church districts.

The highest level governing body is the Regional Synod, which normally meets once a year for a week. During the year decisions are taken by its executive board (Praesidium) consisting of fifteen people, recognised as the church leadership. It is chaired by the Church President, who is the highest representative of the Church and its senior minister. The staff of the Regional Church Office in Düsseldorf do the work needed to service the church leadership.
