“I’m full of joy, redeemed, set free” is the slogan being used by the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. It is taken from the opening lines of a psalm-poem by the Rhineland cabaret artist and writer Hanns Dieter Hüsch (1925-2005).

Regional Synod

The decision-making body

The regional synod has 210 voting members, who meet once a year and make the key decisions for the EKiR, including ecclesiastical regulations and the budget.

The Regional Synod is the governing body for the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland (EKiR). It normally meets once a year for about a week in Bad Neuenahr. It is composed of delegates of the 38 districts of the EKiR, the 38 superintendents of the districts, three professors of theology, the members of the church executive board – who are responsible for the management of the EKiR over the year – along with a number of appointed members.

Altogether the regional synod has 210 voting members. Their main decisions concern church regulations and the regional church budget. They are also responsible for electing the executive board. The term ‘synod’ means a church assembly and isn’t used only for the regional synod.  At the district level the district synods – which are essentially made up of representatives from the local church congregations - make decisions about matters affecting the districts.

The next regional synod of the EKiR will take place from 8 – 13 January 2017. President Manfred Rekowski will preach at the opening service.
