The Bible is the central foundation for the faith and life of Protestants in the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland (EKiR). It tells the history of God’s dealings with his people. It is the Word of God, even though it was written down and passed on by human beings in the context of their own historical circumstances.
“As often as possible” the Christian congregation gathers for worship “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”. What this means is presented in more detail in the constitution of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland (EKiR).
Water is the central symbol in baptism, the sacrament of reception into the church. Throughout the world it is in baptism that a person is received into the Christian community.
Confirmation is a typical feature of Protestant identity. It affirms the reception of the individual by God. This reception by God has already been promised in baptism and with confirmation this is affirmed by the local congregation.
At a wedding the union of husband and wife or of same-sex partners is brought under the auspices of the Word of God and given God’s blessing. The love between two people is a gift from God who created humankind. This concept defines the Protestant understanding of a wedding.
From the beginning the Christian community has accompanied its dead to their final rest. A funeral is an expression of love and of respect for the one who has died. The central focus of the funeral service is faith in God, who raised Jesus Christ from the dead.
